Greenacres FC History
Since 1965
The Greenacres Football Club was established in the garage of Ron Evans in 1965, starting with Junior Colts, the Club was called Super Elliott’s based at Manoora Street in Greenacres, with the Club wearing green and black from the very beginning. The first senior side was in 1967 under Coach Tony Bova, they played at the Hospital Grounds on Fosters Road. In 1970 the Club moved to what is now known as Edward Smith Oval, the home of the mighty Dragons. The Council renovated the old headmaster’s house at the old Northfield Primary School which was the clubrooms until the club built the current “Grand North” building on Grand Junction Road. The Clubrooms are now behind the Grand North building, giving you great views of the oval.
The Dragons can boast the rare although not quite unique distinction of having claimed senior grade premierships in each of the South Australian Amateur Football League’s top five divisions. The club’s heyday came during the 1980s when the seniors were coached by former Port Adelaide player Stephen ‘Bomber’ Clifford. In 1988 Clifford steered the Dragons to their first and so far, only topflight premiership thanks to an 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77) grand final defeat of Broadview in the Division 1 Grand Final.
The club recently saw success winning its last A Grade premiership in 2022, with an incredible record of 19-0 for the season, giving the club its first-ever undefeated season and claiming the division 7 Grand Final. We are also very excited about our growing women and junior programs which will see Greenacres not only survive but thrive for decades to come.
